Preserved for decades among the family belongings of his daughter, Karen, the military artifact was discovered while the team was helping Karen navigate a difficult life transition following the sudden loss of her husband.
Instead of disappearing into another box or being unknowingly discarded, this important piece of military history has now found a permanent home where its story can be shared.
What Is a World War II Blood Chit?
A Blood Chit was a survival aid carried by American and Allied military personnel operating in foreign territories. Printed or sewn with messages in local languages, it asked civilians who encountered a downed or stranded service member to provide assistance and safe passage.These pieces of fabric literally helped save lives.
Today, surviving WW2 Blood Chits are important historical artifacts representing courage, survival, humanity, and international cooperation during one of the most consequential periods in American history.
From a Family Home to a North Georgia Military Collection
In August 2026, Captain Boquist’s Blood Chit was formally presented and placed on display at Blue 42 Market, a community outpost of the Dahlonega Military Heritage Museum in Dahlonega, Georgia
The dedication came during a particularly meaningful year as America commemorates its 250th anniversary and communities across the country reflect on the people and personal stories that helped shape our nation. “It was a joy to have my dad honored in such a special way and to learn even more about the time he spent serving our country,” says Karen. “I can’t thank Denise and her team enough for all they did to help me through such a challenging time.”
For Dahlonega and the surrounding North Georgia community, with its deep connections to military service, patriotism, and public service, the artifact represents far more than an interesting piece of WW2 memorabilia.
It is a family story that has become part of a community’s shared history.
